HYOSHI in Counterpoint
Asian Fusion

Hyoshi in Counterpoint is a dynamic ensemble based in South Australia featuring a talented roster of musicians, debuting in OzAsia Festival 2022.
In Japanese, the word “Hyoshi” has multiple meanings: it can refer to time and tempo, and also to a moment, a chance. It's when something clicks and feels just right!
The group includes community-minded Guzheng virtuoso Zhao Liang, theatre music expert and multi-instrumentalist Jennifer Trijo, internationally acclaimed Shamisen player Noriko Tadano, and highly sought-after string players Karen De Nardi (violin, viola) and Monica Myung (cello), all led by percussionist Satomi Ohnishi.
These six women, each rooted in diverse musical traditions, have forged a distinctive artistic synergy through their performances and workshops, such as the Nexus Arts Orchestra/Interplay Program and the Contemporary Asian Australian Performance (CAAP) Artist Lab.
Since their debut at OzAsia 2022, the ensemble has performed their original music composed by the members at the Adelaide Festival Centre's 50th Birthday Concert, OzAsia Lucky Dumpling Market (2022-2024), Douglas Gautier’s (Adelaide Festival Centre CEO and Artistic Director) Farewell event (2025), and was featured on the ABC National Music Show with Andrew Ford in 2023.
2026 sees them travelling to Brisbane for performances in February as part of the BrisAsia celebrations.

And ahead of their second appearance at OzAsia Festival, Hyoshi in Counterpoint drop by our the studio in Adelaide to give us a taste of their music. They're an ensemble of six women from different musical backgrounds, bringing together the sounds of Shamisen, Guzheng, strings, keyboard and a rather quirky drum-kit to create musical responses to visual artworks.
